DHA for Li’l Ones®

Li'L Ones Yogurt ChildWhat is DHA?

DHA (Docosahexaenoic acid) is an omega-3 fatty acid that comes from several sources – fish and algae are the most common. According to Health Canada, DHA is the primary omega-3 fatty acid present in the brain and retina. It is critical for the optimal development and function of the brain, eyes and central nervous system during childhood. Some of the additional reported benefits of DHA include:

  • Increased visual activity during infancy
  • Improvements in mental development
  • Improved problem solving skills
  • Sustained attention

Because DHA plays such an important role in the proper development of the brain and eyes, not having enough DHA could negatively impact these vital organs.

How much DHA is right for children?

There isn’t an official recommendation for DHA for children; however, most experts recommend at least 100 to 150 milligrams of DHA for children each day. Studies have shown that most children between one and five only consume an average of 30 – 50 mg of DHA per day. There are a variety of foods specially made for children with added DHA. For toddlers, some of the best sources of DHA include omega-3 enriched eggs, yogurt – like Li’L Ones – breads, DHA milk or soy milk and some fortified juices.

It’s always important to read the labels on products you are purchasing. Some products contain alpha linolenic acid (ALA) – an omega -3 fatty acid that does not provide the same benefits as DHA.

Having trouble picking the right yogurt brand? Follow these simple tips:

  • Look for yogurts that are naturally sweetened with fruit juice – Li’L Ones® yogurt is a great choice. It is specifically formulated to provide a wholesome, healthy, nutrient-rich snack children love. It is a source of calcium and vitamin D, with no added sugar or fructose.
  • Generally, it is best when introducing yogurt to your toddler to opt for familiar flavours like vanilla, banana or apple.
  • When looking for healthy yogurt options, try to find a yogurt that contains DHA. Most children’s diets lack sufficient quantities of DHA, which is required for optimal brain and eye development. Pediatricians recommend buying products with DHA to supplement a toddler’s diet. Health Canada has also acknowledged the physiological functions of DHA and has approved DHA-enhanced dairy products for food use in Canada.
